Bangor is a town in Franklin County, New York, United States. The population was 2,147 at the 2000 census. The town is named after Bangor in Wales.

The Town of Bangor is an interior town of the county, located west of the Village of Malone.

History

Settlement commenced around 1806. The Town of Bangor was organized from the Town of Dickinson in 1812. The town lost some territory upon the later foundation of the Town of Brandon in 1828.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 43.1 square miles (112 km2), all of it land.

US Route 11 and New York State Route 11B are important east-west highways across the town.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,147 people, 776 households, and 585 families residing in the town. The population density was 49.8 people per square mile (19.2/km²). There were 841 housing units at an average density of 19.5 per square mile (7.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.00% White, 0.37% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.12% of the population.

There were 776 households out of which 36.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.6% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.12.

In the town the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.9% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,033, and the median income for a family was $35,708. Males had a median income of $26,802 versus $21,597 for females. The per capita income for the town was $13,679. About 14.1% of families and 18.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.7% of those under age 18 and 12.4% of those age 65 or over.
